Hey political junkies‼️ We asked our PXXXT team members and friends to recommend a book on politics that will help you our dear readers to make sense of the seemingly irrational events that are happening today in the world from the on-going Covid-19 pandemic, China’s military aggressiveness in South China Sea, to President Duterte’s bungling of the country’s Covid-19 response even the immorality and obscenity of the corruption allegations in Philhealth and the 28-million pesos dolomite sand dumping project in Manila Bay.

We hope that these books will help you to momentarily escape the shenanigans of our political realities and perhaps, as you sojourn to the world of ideas, you might find the solutions to our current political predicaments! Read on!

1. George Orwel’s 1984 and Animal Farm

Why are we recommending this?

“The resurgence of disinformation and our government’s oversensitivity to mainstream media remind us of George Orwell’s 1984, in the book, “Newspeak” was the language used by the State to suppress thought or alter history propagated by a “Ministry of Truth.” Likewise, George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a classic literature that shows us the evils of dictatorship and the challenge as well as failures of resistance.”

2.  Henry Kissinger’s Diplomacy

Why are we recommending this?

This is a classic book for those interested in global politics and diplomacy. It is a wonderful and exciting account of 20th century’s political history of Western nation-states through the lens of realist theory in International Relations (IR). This is a realist book par excellence. And there is no scholar who can combine both praxis and theory in diplomacy and international relations other than Henry Kissinger.”

3. Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince

Why are we recommending this?

“If you want to rule, you must read Machiavelli’s The Prince. This book laid out an amoral theory of power and governance which became the basis of realpolitik. For Machiavelli sometimes it is detrimental for the state when a ruler acts with virtue, and vicious actions are sometimes needed for the good of the state. He famously said in the book that the appearance of virtue is more important than true virtue itself as it can become liability for rulers. Is President Duterte the perfect embodiment of a Machiavellian leader? Find the answer in this book.

4. Reinhold Niebuhr’s Moral Man and Immoral Society: Study in Ethics and Politics

Why are we recommending this?

“This book talks about how individuals may have a certain sense of morality but as a group we exist on a very different plane. For instance, why do we glorify our leaders then bash them when they changed their stand on issues? If you want to know the answer to this question, this book is for you.

Gerald Magno, Political Science Instructor
