They say that one can have a good look at the soul of a country not only through its public markets or parks or streets but also through its universities.
Universities offer a unique glimpse of a nation’s intellectual and cultural ethos. It is a place where ideals of freedom are fought and scientific breakthroughs are nurtured and crystallized.
As a young Filipino scholar in South Korea, I had a chance to study and visit in some of the country’s top universities and document its splendors in films.
Here is Ewha Womans University.
Ewha Womans University is a private women’s university in Seoul founded in 1886 by Mary F. Scranton under Emperor Gojong. It is Korea’s first modern educational institution for women, and largest educational institution for women in the world.
Ewha University is a top-tiered University in South Korea. It ranked 299th in the QS World University Rankings in 2018. It is also the most beautiful only being rivaled by Kyung Hee University.
“Ewha” means “Pear Blossoms”, a name that given by the Emperor Gojong in 1887 that alludes to a grove of pear trees near Scranton’s home.
Before the pandemic, Filipino tourists usually frequent Ewha University since it is located in Seoul. It is a perfect picture spot.
But with recent travel restrictions due to pandemic, it would take a while before Filipino tourists may visit this place again.
