LIST: Filipino Celebrities Running This 2022 Elections

Celebrities, using their charming looks and star power, are making their way into politics. And the 2022 elections are no exception.

This year, veterans and newcomers are all competing for national and local posts, trying to topple established politicians and members of political dynasties.

Whether or not they have the capabilities to govern is something voters would only know after the elections.

But for these celebrities, the goal is public service, never mind if they are unaware of the intricacies of governance, from the lawmaking to the implementation.

Sometimes, politics can bolster a celebrity’s personality. In others, it can spell doom and failure, especially if they cannot resist the temptations of corruption.

Here are the celebrities vying for a seat of power on the national and local scene:

President

Isko Moreno Domagoso – The incumbent mayor of the City of Manila is gunning for the presidency, just three years after his fame skyrocketed for cleansing what many perceived to be a dirty city. Running along with Dr. Willie Ong, he currently ranks third in pre-election surveys.

Vice President

Vicente “Tito” Sotto III – Sotto, currently the Senate President and the longtime host of the noontime show “Eat Bulaga,” is seeking the second-highest position in the land after more than three decades in government. Ranking second in pre-election polls, he runs alongside Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson.

Senator

Herbert Bautista – The “Bagets” star who served for three terms as Quezon City mayor is taking a shot at the Senate under the UniTeam ticket of former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio. His ex-girlfriend, Kris Aquino, urged the public not to vote for him because he couldn’t keep a promise.

Jinggoy Estrada – After losing in the 2019 midterm elections and appearing in the 2020 Metro Manila Film Festival entry “Coming Home,” Estrada is mounting another Senate comeback. But he has to compete again with his brother, former Sen. JV Ejercito, who’s also mounting a Senate comeback. Still tried for corruption charges, he is running under the Marcos-Duterte ticket.

Monsour Del Rosario – A former taekwondo champion and actor in various action films, Del Rosario hopes to be a member of the Senate three years after he last served in the legislature as representative of Makati City’s first district. He has endorsed the candidacy of Vice President Leni Robredo.

Robin Padilla – The prominent action star, who President Duterte granted an absolute pardon in 2016 after being convicted of illegal possession of firearms in 1994, is gunning for a seat in the Senate. While he is ridiculed for his lack of concrete plans if elected, he is within the winning circle per pre-election surveys. He runs under the administration party, PDP-Laban, but unclear if he is part of the UniTeam Senate slate.

District Representative

Angelica Jones – The “Miss Flawless” hitmaker and incumbent provincial board member of Laguna’s third district is now running as representative of that district.

Anjo Yllana – The former host of “Eat Bulaga” will try to end the Fuentabellas’ reign in Camarines Sur’s fourth district.

Arjo Atayde – The Asian Academy Creative Awards Best Actor for 2020 is gunning a seat to be Quezon City’s first district representative.

Jolo Revilla – The son of Sen. Bong Revilla is now gunning a seat at the lower chamber, representing the first district of Cavite.

Richard Gomez – The veteran actor, who starred in films such as “Hihintayin Kita Sa Langit,” “Dahas” and “Mano Po” is seeking to be Leyte’s fourth district representative this year.

Richard Yap – The Tsinoy actor who rose to prominence in the daytime series “Be Careful With My Heart” is running for representative of Cebu City’s first district.

Party-List Representative

Karla Estrada – The “Queen Mother” is the third nominee of Tingog Sinirangan Party-list, who has expressed its support for the candidacies of Marcos Jr. and Duterte. Tingog Sinirangan’s current representative, Yedda Romualdez, voted against the renewal of the broadcast franchise of ABS-CBN, Estrada’s home network that airs her talk show “Magandang Buhay.”

Mocha Uson – The Mocha Girls lead vocalist and pro-Duterte blogger is the first nominee of the Mothers for Change (MOCHA) Party-list, supposedly representing mothers even if she isn’t one.

Tom Rodriguez – The GMA-7 actor, who made headlines recently for the controversy involving his relationship with his wife Carla Abellana, is the first nominee of Anak Maharlikang Pilipino Party-list, a group representing construction workers.

Governor

Daniel Fernando – The award-winning actor and incumbent governor of Bulacan is seeking another term and endorsing the candidacy of Robredo.

Vice Governor

Alex Castro – An incumbent provincial member, Castro is now vying to be vice governor of Bulacan, running alongside Fernando.

Ejay Falcon – The “Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition Plus” big winner mounts a campaign to be Oriental Mindoro’s next vice governor, running along with incumbent Gov. Humerlito “Bonz” Dolor.

Imelda Papin – The “Jukebox Queen” is running for reelection as vice governor of Camarines Sur.

Provincial Board Member

Jason Abalos – The GMA-7 actor vies to be a provincial board member of Nueva Ecija’s second district.

Mayor

Javi Benitez – The son of billionaire and former Rep. Albee Benitez – the owner of Brightlight Productions, which produces the noontime show “Launch Out Loud” and magazine program “Rated Korina” – and boyfriend of “The Broken Marriage Star” antagonist Sue Ramirez is gunning to be mayor of Victorias City, Negros Occidental.

Lucy Torres-Gomez – The socialite and the wife of Gomez is running to take over her spouse’s current position: mayor of Ormoc City, Leyte.



Vice Mayor

Yul Servo – The incumbent representative from Manila’s third district is now vying for the vice-mayoralty seat of the nation’s capital. He runs alongside incumbent Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna. Servo voted in 2020 to reject ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal.

Councilor

Aiko Melendez – The “Prima Donnas” antagonist will reenter politics, vying to be a councilor of Quezon City’s fifth district.

Angelu De Leon – The “Ang TV” and “T.G.I.S.” star is seeking a seat as councilor of Pasig City’s second district, running under the incumbent’s slate.

Arci Muñoz – The ABS-CBN-2 star is running for councilor in Cainta, Rizal.

Bobby Andrews – De Leon’s former loveteam in “T.G.I.S.” is gunning a seat as councilor of Quezon City’s fourth district.

Dennis Padilla – After more than a decade, Padilla seeks to return to be a councilor of Caloocan City, this time in its second district.

Nash Aguas – The 22-year-old actor who started his career in “Goin’ Bulilit” is part of the councilor’s slate of aspiring mayor of Cavite City, Denver Chua.

Vandolph Quizon – The son of “Comedy King” Dolphy is seeking another term as councilor of Paranaque City’s first district, along with Jomari Yllana, who are both running under the “Team Sulong New Paranaque” ticket.
