From August 17 to 20, the Democratic Party will formally nominate Fmr. Vice President Joe Biden and California Sen. Kamala Harris to form their Party’s ticket against incumbent Donald Trump and Mike Pence of the Grand Old Party at the 2020 Democratic National Convention devoid of its usual live audience of thousands due to the CoViD-19 pandemic.

The DNC has planned four nights of virtual programming, culminating in Joe Biden’s acceptance speech on Thursday, August 20, not in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the original site of the convention, because of concerns caused by the pandemic. Instead, he and Harris will deliver their convention speeches from the Chase Center in Biden’s hometown of Wilmington, Delaware. The DNC has confirmed that none of the convention speakers will appear before a crowd.

Aside from formally naming their candidates for the November 3 election, Party members will also unveil the 2020 Democratic platform, the list of party values and policy priorities which they believe distinguish them from their rival Republicans.

The Democrats officially decided to turn their convention into an all virtual affair. It was a significant change, but Democratic convention planners had long been prepping for a highly-produced week that would need to be broadcast from multiple locations across the country. This political convention won’t look like any we’ve seen before but the stakes are as high as ever.

Instead of 50,000 people gathering for the traditional convention with days full of speeches, receptions, and rallies, sessions will be streamed from the Democratic Party’s social media channels and aired live on most US news channels from 11:00 pm New York time. Hard choices were inevitably forced by the fact that Democrats have reduced their program to just two hours each night.

The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) announced that an unprecedented lineup of Americans from across the country will share their stories at the 2020 Democratic National Convention. Planners have promised “fewer people behind podiums – and more people in living rooms, on factory floors, at small businesses, and in schools and town squares”.

From small business owners to teachers, factory workers, frontline healthcare workers, parents worrying about their children’s health and safety as the school year begins, farmers struggling in Trump’s failed trade war, to people with preexisting conditions worried about Trump repealing the Affordable Care Act, and lifelong Republicans putting country over party, for four nights why Joe Biden’s vision to build a better future will benefit all Americans.

In look and feel, the 2020 Democratic National Convention will be different. More innovative, more creative—and engage with more Americans than ever before. “Uniting America” will serve as the primary theme for the four nights of programming.

The convention is also a chance to highlight the party’s rising stars, like Barack Obama in 2004. While Biden’s choice of Kamala Harris as his running mate has made her an heir apparent, other names on the speaking schedule might someday challenge her.

On Monday, Senator Bernie Sanders, Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Representative Jim Clyburn, Convention Chairman Representative Bennie Thompson, Representative Gwen Moore, Former Ohio Governor and Republican John Kasich, Alabama Senator Doug Jones, Wisconsin Senator Amy Klobuchar, and Former First Lady Michelle Obama are the featured Speakers.

Tuesday will feature Former Acting US Attorney General Sally Yates, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Former Secretary of State John Kerry, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester, Former President Bill Clinton, and Former Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden

On Tuesday, the party will also do the traditional “roll call across America,” in which they’ll broadcast footage from all 57 states and territories as delegates officially cast their votes for the Democratic nominee.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Governor Tony Evers, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, the Vice Presidential Nominee Sen. Kamala Harris, and Former President Barack Obama will speak on Wednesday.

“This convention is for all Americans. We will unite America and elect Joe Biden as president so we can begin to build a more just, more democratic, kinder and stronger country—a better America,”  Stephanie Cutter, DNC.

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Senator Tammy Baldwin, Senator Tammy Duckworth, Senator Chris Coons, Senator Kamala Harris, and the Biden Family will join Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday to formally accept the Democratic nomination for President. Joe Biden will speak about his vision for uniting America to move America forward out of constant chaos and crisis, and for delivering on that promise for all.

Viewers can also expect inspiring performances from artists including Leon Bridges, The Chicks, Common, Billie Eilish, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Billy Porter, Maggie Rogers, Prince Royce, Stephen Stills, and more. The musical acts will be featured across all four nights of the convention.

The Republican National Convention celebration, being held the following week Aug. 24-Aug. 27 has been mired with logistical challenges from the outset. The Republican National Committee was initially planning to hold their convention in Charlotte, N.C.; then that changed to Jacksonville, Fla., which was also subsequently canceled. Pres. Trump is said to accept the nomination from the White House, a deviation from presidential decorums.

The official live stream for the 2020 Democratic National Convention will be hosted right on their website.
